By Anne Skove, Esq.
ADVERTISEMENTS
It's that time of year -- time to look around for the most haunted courthouses.
- Footsteps after hours? Must be haunted, because nobody's working overtime. That's the story behind the Georgetown, S.C. County Courthouse. See Ghosts, Spirits, Wander Georgetown, Georgetown Times (October 27, 2010).
- A jury aquitted him nearly 100 years ago; recently, a paranormal investigator found...guess what? That's right, nothing! See the fascinating A Verdict, But Not the End, John Keilman, Chicago Tribune (October 30, 2010).
- How much excitement occurs at your courthouse? Once upon a time in Calcasieu County, Louisiana, Toni Jo Henry was convicted of murder while she broke her boyfriend out of jail. She was the only woman to die in the electric chair in Louisiana. Years later, her spirit is reportedly
meddling with office equipment.
See Calcasieu Courthouse Featured on National TV ShowGhost Stories,
, Charlotte Stanley, Lake Charles Zombie Examiner (October 19, 2010). No human being would stack books like this!
In St. Joseph, Missouri, Rosie the ghost reportedly reshelves books poorly after hours. Also, a truly terrifying (because it really happened) lynching occured on the courthouse steps in 1933. According to paranormal investigators, there is a growling sound. Hmm, the lynching scares us a whole lot more. See The Hauntings of St. Joseph, Jennifer Gordon, News-Press (October 24, 2010).- Newton County, Georgia, now apparently has two courthouses. One can be seen in episodes of The Vampire Diaries. The other is a replica, donated by the CW. Something like that. See Scaling Down:
Vampire Diaries
Donates Courthouse Replica, Crystal Tatum, Newton Citizen (October 14, 2010). Note from the photo that the replica is tiny, much like the mini-stonehenge.
