NFL Rumors: Giants have contacted Chris Hogan’s camp in free agency

The New England Patriots already let Cordarrelle Patterson walk in free agency. Is Chris Hogan next?

The New York Giants recently spoke with Hogan’s representatives in free agency, the New York Daily News’ Pat Leonard reported Thursday, citing a league source.

Hogan has close ties to the Tri-State area, having grown up in northern New Jersey and attended nearby Monmouth University. The Giants obviously have a need at receiver after trading superstar Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns.

The wide receiver has spent the last three seasons with the Patriots but saw a downtick in production late in the 2018 campaign, catching two or fewer passes in eight of his last nine regular season games.

The Patriots agreed to a two-year deal with Phillip Dorsett on Wednesday but still are thin at receiver with Patterson’s departure and Josh Gordon serving an indefinite suspension.

Hogan has been a solid producer in New England with at least 34 catches in each of his three seasons, but there’s a higher bidder like New York in free agency, they may opt to move on and search for other free agent options.

Chris Hogan understands the “business” of Patriots not re-signing him

Chris Hogan had seen plenty of wide receivers come and go during his three-year tenure with the New England Patriots.

So, when Hogan found out that three-year tenure was ending Friday, he understood the Patriots’ decision not to re-sign him in free agency.

“It?s a business. I can’t read too much into it,” Hogan said after Carolina Panthers signed him to a one-year contract in free agency, via ESPN.com’s Mike Reiss. ?At the end of the day, they’re trying to run the team as best as they see fit.

“Sometimes things don’t work out. I’m just really excited about this opportunity.”

Hogan carved out a solid niche in New England, averaging 15.4 yards per catch over three seasons as a zone-busting slot man. His production dipped last season when Josh Gordon entered the fold, however, and it appears the Patriots are going in a different direction as they eye wide receiver prospects in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Why aren’t Patriots good at drafting receivers?

As for Hogan, he’ll jump from one former NFL MVP to another in Panthers quarterback Cam Newton. While Tom Brady and Newton are very different players, the 30-year-old Hogan sees some similarities between the two QBs.

“Tom was great. He demanded a lot and was an ultimate competitor,? Hogan told reporters in a conference call, via Panthers.com. ?From what I hear and just from watching Cam play, he?s the ultimate competitor as well. Really excited about the opportunity to play with him.”

Hogan will get the chance to see his old club this summer, as the Patriots visit Carolina in Week 3 of the preseason. It appears he’s at peace with moving on after two Super Bowl rings in New England, however.

Patriots have never spent a first-round pick on a receiver during Bill Belichick’s tenure

The New England Patriots have a reputation for having trouble draft receivers. That’s well-earned, to an extent. Since 2009, the Patriots have only drafted one receiver that has panned out long-term, Julian Edelman. Other picks have either failed to live up to expectations or haven’t worked out at the NFL level.

However, there is a surprising stat about the Patriots and drafting receivers that may help to explains why so few of the team’s draft picks at the position have panned out.

CURRAN: Why the Patriots aren’t good at drafting wide receivers

According to NFL Research, in 19 drafts with the Patriots, Bill Belichick has never selected a receiver in the first round. And of the 1,000-yard receivers that Belichick has had during his tenure, they have come only via late-round picks or by trades.

Of course, the caveat here is that Brandin Cooks was acquired in exchange for a first-round pick, so technically speaking, that is using a first-round pick on a receiver. Still, Cooks was a well-established veteran player, so trading a first-round pick for that type of a player is different than drafting an unknown commodity.

That said, it’s clear that the Patriots’ draft strategy doesn’t value receivers that heavily. They tend to settle on mid-to-late-round guys to develop in hopes of making them quality playmakers. They either do that or acquire proven veterans. This makes sense given how hard it is to land quality receivers in the draft.

PERRY: Which draft QBs fit the Patriots mold?

It will be interesting to see if the Patriots change their draft strategy this year, given their needs for offensive weaponry. They have been scouting receivers and tight ends heavily ahead of the draft, so perhaps they will consider breaking their trend and targeting a new player for Tom Brady to throw to.
