Class Action Lawsuit on Kitchen Stoves

By Beth Janicek

ADVERTISEMENTS

A huge class action lawsuit was settled by Sears involving as many as 4 million customers and costing the retailer $546 million.  Most customers are not aware that stoves without safety brackets are dangerous.

            The facts are as follows:

1.      The lawsuit was filed as a result of Sear's failure to install safety brackets.  The safety brackets prevent appliances from tipping over when the oven door is open and weight is place on it.  As a result of the stoves tipping over, more that a 100 consumers have been killed or injured;

2.      The stoves involved are the freestanding and slide-in gas and electric ranges purchased and installed by Sears from July 2, 2000 to September 18, 2007;

3.      You are entitled to have a Sears technician install a range stability device or if you have installed a bracket yourself, you are entitled to reimbursement up to $100; and

4.      Claims must be filed by September 8, 2008.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission in Washington DC knew the kitchen stoves were hazardous and children and the elderly were mostly at risk.  Sears is being held accountable and if you or a family member had a stove installed by Sears between July 2000 and September 2007, review the details listed in the Sears Range Settlement website.
