Are you marketing more and profiting less? Business Development expert Darryl Cross says it's time to start spending no less than 80% of your time and money marketing the parts of your practice that you consider the high end work. Michael G. Cummings and I join Darryl in explaining that it's all about focus: By eliminating the hours you spend developing low end work, you can immediately start raising your rates.

It is time to stop grimacing and choking down your current book of business. Make the change to a smoother practice, with these business building techniques:

1. Start spending no less than 80% of your time and money marketing the parts of your practice that you consider the high end work.

2. Always meet face-to-face with people who give you the high profile work.

Michael Cummings, law firm marketing3. Find solid people in your referral network that you can start feeding your lower end work.

4. Eliminate from your bio and directory listings all of the general matters that you can do. Emphasize the high end work only. People are smart enough to figure out you can handle the simpler stuff if they need it.

5. Refuse speaking and publishing opportunities that do not emphasize your specialty work.

6. Create a separate web site or blog that discusses only the complex issues you want to specialize in.

By eliminating the hours you spend developing low end work and raising the hours you spend on high end work, you can immediately start raising your rates. This equates to more money in the same amount of time spent working. And that is something you do not have to choke down.
