ARGENTINA #4 . . . TIGRE AND THE DELTA . . .We took a trip by train last week to the town of Tigre, located about 18 miles north of Buenos Aires. It's where the Delta begins--a network of islands and wetlands where the principal mode of travel is by boat.

Here's the water taxi that took us to the place we ate lunch, a 30-minute trip upriver (click to enlarge)--

More details and photos after the jump . . .

The trip started by commuter train in Buenos Aires--

In Olivos, a suburb of Buenos Aires, we got off the train and walked through the neighborhoods to another train line called the Train of the Coast. In this picture, Andrea and Sam are looking at houses--an unusual sight for us in Buenos Aires, where most people live in apartments, at least in the neighborhood where we've been living.

Now Andrea and Sam are waiting at the next train station as Sam eats lunch--

This is the building in Tigre that houses the Buenos Aires Rowing Club--

In the water taxi that's in the first picture in this post, Sam is looking out the window--

Here's the dock where the water taxi dropped us off--

A look downriver from the same vantage point (it's really more of a canal than a river, I guess; there are various forks, where a boat can turn to the right or left. The various houses don't have street numbers, but descriptive names)--

In the area where we got off the boat, there was a wooden sidewalk. There's no traffic noise in the Delta--because there's no traffic! It was a nice break from the noise of Buenos Aires, where the traffic is constant, like living in the middle of Manhattan--

Andrea and Sam, heading to the restaurant where we planned to eat lunch--

More of the same, now walking on a levee--

Finally at lunch. It was a weekday during the off season; we were the only ones at the restaurant--

Here's Sam and me walking back towards our water taxi. We had a vague idea about how to get picked up; when we got back to the dock, there was another woman waiting, and we followed her lead--

At the end of the trip, we're back in Retiro Station in Buenos Aires--
