Says John McCain:

?She is a governor, the most popular governor in America. I think she is the most qualified of any that has run recently for vice president.?

So the latter statement is completely, utterly, cataclysmically false. But can we agree that it's foolish to parse it in terms of literal truth? Surely McCain was not thinking of Al Gore, or Dick Cheney, or Joe Lieberman. My guess is that this is an emotional thing: John McCain absolutely hates it when people say Palin is unqualified because that fact is destroying his bid to be president. An honest assessment of Sarah Palin's qualifications is, for McCain, a glance into the void, an unreflected Medusa.

So he states as fact what he wishes were true. It is not that McCain doesn't know Palin is less qualified than Dick Cheney. It's that his words come not from his head, but from a place deeper and darker, where a desperate clutch of the unreal is all that keeps you alive.
