UC Irvine Law? Top 20?

By Stephen Bainbridge

ADVERTISEMENTS

National Law Journal:

UC Irvine School of Law, which began accepting applications for enrollment a month ago, plans to offer full tuition scholarships to its first class, which is anticipated to be about 60 students, said Charles Cannon, assistant dean of development and external affairs at the law school.

Originally, the school, which will focus on public interest law, had planned to offer full tuition scholarships to about half that class; but, in an effort to lure high-quality students and compete with other top 20 law schools, UC Irvine School of Law has expanded that program, he said.

“Other” top 20 schools?!? Did my friend and former UCLA colleague Charles Cannon really say something to the NLJ implying that UC Irvine is a top 20 law school before it has even admitted its first class?

Irvine may get a bump in the rankings during its first year because it’s new, and shiny, and fashionably left-wing (great timing, BTW). After the newness wears off, however, I bet it ends up somewhere around 75 or so, at best.

Screwing your biggest donor by asking him to take his name off the school, for example, isn’t a great start.
