: Dispatches from the Culture WarsCollege Basketball Preview
By Ed Brayton
The college basketball season is almost upon us, so in the hope of getting Eric Rothschild interested in my blog against despite his disappointment in my vote choices, here's my preview of the 2008/2009 season. Let's start with the obvious: North Carolina is the #1 team in the country. I'm not the only one saying this, of course. They were first unanimous preseason #1 in the history of the AP poll and deservedly so.
The Tar Heels are absolutely loaded. Their second team would rank in the top 15 in the country, maybe the top 10. They return virtually the entire rotation from last year from a team that won 36 games and they add a top 5 recruiting class just to rub it in. Their starting lineup includes last year's player of the year, Tyler Hansbrough and two other all-American candidates in Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington. They're deep and talented at every single position and the clear favorite to win it all this year.
