NY Bicycle Accidents- Ghost Riders and Why You Don't Want to Be One

I read a chilling article about bicycle accidents today in New York magazine. Every bicycle rider in New York should read this shocking story. It's upsetting and frankly, frightening.

The premise of the article is about bicycle riders who have died in accidents in New York City. A group known as the New York City Street Memorial Project, have decided to create memorials to the bike riders who gave their lives while riding by taking donated bikes, painting them white and chaining them to a street sign where the accident occurred.

The article describes what happens when a bicyclist dies: " Usually within one week of a cyclist's dying in the saddle, a bicycle is donated or salvaged and covered with three coats of white paint. Often members of the project will gather for a memorial ride to the accident site. A short ceremony will conclude with a "bike lift," a cyclist send-off in which mourners raise their bikes above their heads and are silent."

What is most disturbing about this photo essay are the descriptions of how the bicyclist died while riding their bike.

As a frequent biker, this article is a 'wake-up' call, once again, as to how dangerous bicycling in New York City really is. We often see bike messengers and delivery people riding in the street, oblivious to the cars that deem the city streets 'their turf'. Motorists are usually blissfully unaware of bicyclists and frequently fail to check their side-door mirror before flinging open their door- not realizing there may be a passing bicyclist about to get killed.

To read the full article click on the link to NY Magazine.
