New Domain: .Tel

ADVERTISEMENTS

The NY Times reports that there’s a new domain, .tel, which will allow you to store your contact info — email address, Skype address, cellphone number, work phone number, location, keywords, and more.  According to the article, .net “has the potential to become a phone book for the Internet.”  People will be able to point their Web browsers at yourname.tel in order to view your up-to-date contact info.

You can see how .tel will work by using a simulator provided by Telnic, the sporsor for .tel.  They even give you a couple of live examples.  (FYI, Google the Oracle tells me that there are at least 580 active .tel addresses.)

I’m real content with having my contact info mediated by Jenkins or even LinkedIn.  But .tel is intriguing, to say the least.
