The results are published in the December 17 issue of the ia href="http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/short/300/23/2765"font color="#800080"Journal of the American Medical /Association./font/a  /i/p p"Smoking is significantly associated with colorectal cancer incidence and mortality," says the study's lead author, Edoardo Botteri a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/12/16/AR2008121602095.html"font color="#800080"to the Washington Post./font/a /p pTobacco is already considered responsible for about five million deaths a year. Yet there are about one billion smokers worldwide./p pA recent report from the a title="World Health Organization" href="/national-news/exporting-cancer--who-global-report-on-trends.aspx?googleid=253002"World Health Organization/a finds that as U.S. tobacco companies export cigarettes to make up for diminished U.S. sales, that they too are exporting an increase in the rate of cancers. /p pPeople should be aware that smoking increases the risk of cancer not only in organs where there is direct contact with tobacco-related carcinogens, such as lung, oropharynx, larynx and upper digestive tract, but also in organs where exposure to tobacco degradation products is indirect, such as the pancreas, kidney, bladder, cervix, colon and rectum," a href="http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/short/300/23/2765"font color="#800080"explained Botteri/font/a./p pHowever the connection to colorectal cancers was not considered as conclusive as lung cancer for example.  /p pBotteri and his colleagues analyzed data from 106 studies, both large and small. When they looked at the a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/12/16/AR2008121602095.html"font color="#800080"pooled risk of colorectal cancer/font/a, they found smoking was linked to an 18 percent rise in the odds of getting colorectal cancer. The impact of smoking largely began about 10 years after starting and increased to full significance after 30 years./p pBut smokers are reminded that you may not have to wait that long.  Initial screening guidelines for colorectal cancer may have to be lowered for smokers, researchers conclude./p pBesides smoking, a history of polyps increases your risk of developing colorectal cancer, even if they are completely removed./p pMore than 90 percent of those diagnosed with colorectal cancer are over the age of 50./p pA Canadian study issued this week finds that colonoscopy is an effective procedure used to a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/12/15/AR2008121502200.html"font color="#800080"combat colorectal cancer/font/a, but it may not be quite as effective on a href="/national-news/colonoscopy-less-effective-than-previously-thought.aspx?googleid=253396"font color="#800080"detecting polyps on the right side/font/a as the left side of the colon.  #/pa href="http://www.injuryboard.com/national-news/colon-cancer-risk-increases-with-smoking.aspx?googleid=253462"Originally posted/a at a href="http://www.InjuryBoard.com"InjuryBoard/a by a href="http://www.injuryboard.com/member-profiles/Jane-Akre"Jane Akre/adiv class="feedflare" a href="http://feeds.injuryboard.com/~f/IBnationalnews?a=S70WO"img src="http://feeds.injuryboard.com/~f/IBnationalnews?i=S70WO" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.injuryboard.com/~f/IBnationalnews?a=rEUZO"img src="http://feeds.injuryboard.com/~f/IBnationalnews?i=rEUZO" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.injuryboard.com/~f/IBnationalnews?a=EGPRO"img src="http://feeds.injuryboard.com/~f/IBnationalnews?i=EGPRO" border="0"/img/a /divimg src="http://feeds.injuryboard.com/~r/IBnationalnews/~4/487730112" height="1" width="1"/
