Friday Sleb Court Roundup

By Anne Skove, Esq.

ADVERTISEMENTS

Still smarting from our Oscar(R) snub (evidently we have to prove we've been in some type of movie!), here's this week's episode...

  • Slebs behaving well! When was the last time you heard good custody case news, much less good sleb custody case news? Kelly Rutherford (yeah, we had to IMDB her, too!) and her estranged husband were praised by a judge for their conduct during a recent hearing. See Judge Sides with Kelly Rutherford in Custody Issue, Ken Lee, People (January 23, 2009).

  • Demi Moore's daughter (the url makes it look as though it was 19 y.o. Rumer but the article doesn't say which daughter -- either they don't know, or they just can't bring themselves to utter another sleb child's wacky name) stood in line for juvenile traffic court with the normally-named masses. See Demi and Daugter in Court, TMZ (January 23, 2009).

  • What ever happened to Erin Brockovich? She has a MySpace page and was recently spotted in small claims court, helping her daughter with a roommate/rent dispute. See Erin Brockovich Goes Small Time, TMZ (January 23, 2009). Just goes to show what we've always said -- small claims is where the important cases happen.

  • More proof that they're not like the rest of us -- when was the last time you were subject to extortion? In a weird, sad, and still unfolding story, it appears that a paramedic and ambulance driver attempted to extort money from John Travolta after the death of his son. See Bahamas Police Investigate Travolta Extortion Plot, AP (January 23, 2009). As if losing your son wasn't hard enough. What's the matter with people?!

  • An Osbourne with a substance abuse problem? OK, that's not really news, but it appears that Miss Kelly is getting the help she needs. See Kelly Osbourne Returns to Rehab, BBC (January 23, 2009). We thought she was just expressing herself when she assaulted a gossip columnist (*not* a court blogger!). See Kelly Osbourne Arrested on Assault Charge, Jocelyn Vena, MTV News (January 19, 2009).

  • Other slebs are not nearly as self-aware. See Lindsay Lohan: My First DUI Was Really the Paparazzi's Fault, Lucy, fametastic (January 23, 2009). Um, yeah, sheesh, "you're trying to turn a corner, and then somebody else is speeding up alongside you," and you've just killed a bottle of tequila. Guess it runs in the family: see also Dina Lohan: Don't Blame Me for Lindsay Lohan's Problems, Lucy, fametastic (May 25, 2008).

Have a nice weekend!
