: ACS BlogBloggers As Watchdog
At an ACS event in Philadelphia, Adam Bonin, an attorney at Cozen O’Connor and advocate for the rights of online speech, led a discussion about the influence of bloggers to hold lawmakers accountable and shape policy. In the Feb. 4 event, hosted by ACS’s Philadelphia Lawyer Chapter and the University of Pennsylvania Law School Student Chapter, Bonin said that “bloggers are very good at knowing what needs to be opposed” in policy and political arenas, citing the work of bloggers during the Bush administration.
Joining Bonin were John Aravosis of AMERICAblog, Christy Hardin Smith of FireDogLake, Baratunde Thurston of Jack and Jill and The Huffington Post, and Daniel Urevick-Ackelsberg of Young Philly Politics. Aravosis said that bloggers truly excel at bringing attention to stories that might otherwise be overlooked in the mainstream media. “Making a little story a big one,” he said. Thurston added that bloggers have succeeded at putting a spotlight on stories that are later picked up by traditional media outlets. Video of the discussion is available here.
