Media On Trial: Did the Media Fail us with reporting Madoff? Part 10

By Steve Lombardi

ADVERTISEMENTS

Today we continue to analyze and ask why the media missed this softball and how over a ten year period there were no questions being asked in the print and electronic media.

The questions I have about media coverage begins with why weren't the doubts about Madoff's investment scheme aired in the news until after he admitted his investment group was nothing more than a Ponzi scheme? It isn't as if there weren't people and evidence to support a news story. So why wasn't it deemed news worthy?

The Madoff Ponzi Scheme was more than just one man and a group ripping off $65 billion. The number of investment rip-offs says more about the Bush Administration style of running this country by the theory, the end justifies the means. And since the Republican Party adopted Bush as their poster child they have to take responsibility for the wrongs that were committed on their watch. Of course with the likes of Rush and Sean continuing to beat the same old drum without admitting guilt they do no good deed for the Republican Party. Fact is without admitting guilt I have to wonder if they are pounding more nails into the coffin.

Rush and Sean continue to shout "inconceivable" when all evidence points to the Bush Administration policies as having set the stage for massive investment fraud. This leads or will soon lead (Specter's defection is one symptom) those in the party to wonder the next question.

Is the Republican Party committing suicide and taking the media down along with them?

What might be the answers for the American media. I for one don't believe either the American media or the Republican Party are dead. They are ill but not even close to death. Without first diagnosing and then treating the disease they could die, but it's not likely. So what is wrong with each?

Our next post (tomorrow morning) will suggest what makes a great journalist and will also disclose what is wrong with both the media and the Republican Party and why they are failing the public in carrying out their responsibility to the American people. Visit us in an hour for one answer that seems to make sense.
