Local News?FWISD Closes

By mcbride

ADVERTISEMENTS

In response to one case of confirmed swine flu and the fear of more cases which are suspected but have yet to be confirmed, the Fort Worth Independent School District closed yesterday.  The closing is through at least May 8th.  That decision means 80,000 students from 144 campuses are confined to their houses; which means: no day care, no malls, no movies, no ?hanging out? with friends.  The ripple effect on the children?s parents and their respective workplaces is enormous.

?Each school in the district will be scrubbed with a bleached-based cleaner to ensure that all surfaces, walls and common areas are disinfected.  Dr. Sandra Parker, medical director of Tarrant County Public Health, said letters were sent to people who may have had close contact with the sick student or the other three probable cases telling them that they may need to contact a doctor.

She said that Tarrant County now has 10 probable cases of swine flu and that her department is investigating five more from surrounding counties. No other probable case in Tarrant County involved children from other districts or private schools. However, she said the number of cases are “very fluid” and can change quickly.  Parker also said her office recommended closing the Fort Worth school district to prevent the spread of the illness since the district is large and so many students have siblings at other schools.
