MUNICIPAL JUDGE FACES DISCIPLINE FOR FIRM'S POLITICAL GIFTS
"The Advisory Committee on Judicial Conduct is recommending a public admonition for Moonachie Municipal Judge Philip Boggia, whose firm made political contributions, despite his denial that he knew or approved of them. In a presentment released Thursday, the ACJC said the issue was not whether Boggia knew about the contributions but how the public would perceive them, especially in light of New Jersey's strong tradition of a nonpolitical judiciary. Boggia, who has been a judge since 2004, is fighting the charges, claiming that to punish him would amount to holding him vicariously liable for the actions of his law partner."

STATE BAR SUPPORTS TENURE FOR ALBIN, JUDICIAL INDEPENDENCE
"The New Jersey State Bar Association's governing body recently approved a measure defending the integrity of the state's judiciary and supporting tenure for Supreme Court Justice Barry Albin, who is scheduled to appear next week before the Senate Judiciary Committee. The board of trustees' public stance comes in response to recent episodes in which a number of judicial candidates faced confrontational questioning before the committee. Now, some Republican politicians have begun targeting Albin as well, saying he's been an activist from the bench.

U.S. JUSTICES REPORT BIG BOOK EARNINGS FOR 2008
Justice Clarence Thomas took in more than $300,000 in royalties last year for his autobiography, 'My Grandfather's Son,' the 2007 book that traces his rise to the court from his roots in rural Georgia. Justice Antonin Scalia received nearly $100,000 for his co-authored work, 'Making Your Case,' a book on legal advocacy published last year. Justice Stephen Breyer reported collecting $54,821 in royalties from Random House for his 2005 book 'Active Liberty.' The justices' book earnings, part of annual financial disclosures released Friday, show, in the main, a wealthy group serving on the nation's highest court."

MILITARY JAG CORPS EXPERIENCES RECRUITMENT SURGE
"Law firms may not be hiring right now, but Uncle Sam is still looking for a few good men ? and attorneys are taking note. The U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force report a surge in applicants for Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Corps jobs in recent years, according to recruiters and military attorneys. That trend accelerated in 2008, and several branches report that they are on track to hit record numbers of applicants in 2009. Snagging a position as a military attorney is more competitive than ever. It's difficult to pinpoint the precise reason, but the recession certainly seems to be a factor."

WHAT MAKES A COURT SUPREME: PART 5
"Published in the June 8 New Jersey Law Journal, the fifth chapter of Justice Daniel O'Hern's book about his years on the Wilentz Court focuses on Justice Stewart Pollock, who was considered the Court's celebrity justice. Whenever his colleagues attended national conferences, they were asked about Pollock and his opinions, not necessarily their own. Pollock developed a national reputation as the leading advocate of state constitutions as independent sources of guaranteed rights."
