: LawbeatReport stirs pro bono bar

ADVERTISEMENTS
A small-town newspaper's investigation of a possible wrongful conviction continues to yield results. I blogged last month about Christine Young's impressive report on murder convict Lebrew Jones in the Middletown, N.Y., Times Herald-Record. Jones is 19 years into a prison term for a New York City murder. Young -- who has a remarkable personal link to the case -- documented the shakiness of the evidence against Jones. The DA already is taking a fresh look. Recently Young followed up with a report that legal heavy hitters will step in to help Jones, including Davis Polk pro bono star James Benkard and possibly Barry Scheck's Innocence Project. I learned of the update from City Limits (via Criminal Justice Journalists). City Limits' Curtis Stephen reported on Young's efforts and placed the Jones case in the context of New York's DNA-evidence fumbles.Full post as published by Lawbeat on February 14, 2008 (boomark / email).
