Today, President Obama officially announced the ?Race to the Top? funds, $4.35 billion available to states for education reform?with strings. Those include: a requirement to link teacher pay to student achievement, incentives for charter schools, and a move toward common academic standards.
School Board News Today has all the major news stories, plus Secretary Duncan?s editorial in the Washington Post, a Q&A with President Obama on his education plan, and California officials? reactions to the stipulation to tie teacher pay to academic performance, which was aimed at their laws and teachers? unions.
Speaking of California– which may become the first state to go bankrupt even if it is able to claim some of the stimulus money–state officials took control and granted an emergency loan to an insolvent school district. And speaking of bankruptcies, the Detroit school system may become the first major U.S. district to go bankrupt by the end of summer.
In other news, researchers are rushing to test a vaccine for the swine flu after numerous children were afflicted at schools and camps this summer. And new research on how children learn is creating a new scientific field and may transform school practices.
Needless to say, there?s a lot going on in education these days. Check out School Board News Today?s weekly wrap-up to keep up with all the latest news.
