2009 U.S. Supreme Court Review
Our annual look at the high court examines the numbers and trends that shaped the last term and will affect the term to come.
At public law schools, tuition jumps sharply
Double-digit tuition increases loom for students at some of the country's top public law schools. School administrators say that the unusually large tuition hikes for the coming academic year are largely spurred by cuts in public funding ? with endowment losses, initiatives to improve their schools and pressure to keep up with competing institutions also playing a part.
Iraq slow to pay the invoice
On July 20, Monongahela, Pa.-based Wye Oak Technology Inc. filed a $25 million breach-of-contract suit against the Iraqi Ministry of Defense in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. The company was hired in 2004 for a range of projects and claims that invoices totaling more than $24 million remain unpaid.
5th Circuit asks Supreme Court to take certified question for only fifth time in six-plus decades
A federal appellate court recently focused attention on a rare method of obtaining review by the U.S. Supreme Court when it certified a question to the justices in the high-profile prosecution of James Ford Seale for the 1964 kidnapping-murder of two black teenagers. The question that troubled the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit: Although Seale committed the crime in 1964, he was not prosecuted until 2007. Did the law require the prosecution for kidnapping within five years of the crime, or is there no time limit?
Producers of Werner Herzog film charged with FCPA violations
A closely watched criminal trial begins Aug. 4 in a Los Angeles federal court involving a pair of Beverly Hills film producers who are accused of bribing an official of the Thai government in order to obtain lucrative contracts, including management of the Bangkok International Film Festival. The case is one of the few to go to trial involving violations of the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), particularly in the entertainment industry, which increasingly has depended upon sales in foreign markets.

OPINION
Accept more cases, TV coverage
"In the era of the shrinking Supreme Court docket, denying petitions for certiorari may seem strategically expedient. But, in the end, the justices should not shirk their responsibility to say what the law is. Similarly, retaining the majesty and mystery of the Supreme Court as an institution may, at first blush, counsel against admitting television cameras. Yet it is only through observation of that venerable institution that an educated public can truly appreciate its significance."
