Through a Glass Darkly

By John Pieret

ADVERTISEMENTS

The National Center for Science Education has now got the entire collection available at its site of its Creation/Evolution Journal, begun in 1980 and continuing until 1996, when the journal was merged with its Reports of the National Center for Science Education. If nothing else, it will be a good resource on the changes that the "debate" between science and creationism underwent during those years.

For example, in the first issue there is Frank Awbrey's outline of the "Creation Model" of "creation science," with much talk of vapor canopies, the Food and the Ark, and the Second Law of Thermodynamics being triggered by the Fall.

The last issue has an article on Phillip Johnson's "minimal 'intelligent design' creationism" which claimed that "evolution ... rests upon a dogmatic speculative metaphysics and unfairly rules out the better theory?the creationist view that God designed the world for a purpose."

If nothing else, history shows that creationism can evolve ... but not by much.
