Skadden, You Gladden Her Heart

By Ashby Jones

ADVERTISEMENTS

krayStacey Kray (pictured) is a senior associate practicing environmental law in Skadden’s San Francisco office. She’s also got a little side-thing going as a singer-songwriter.

Now, if we were to tell you that Kray managed to blend the two in some LB post-worthy way, you’d probably expect some story about how, during some open-mic night, Kray met someone who knew Norah Jones or Liz Phair or someone and through persistence and charm, Kray managed to bring Skadden copyright or right-of-publicity work or something.

Oh how wrong you’d be. This is so much better.

The story: the American Lawyer’s Ben Hallman, through a story that we’ll let you read here, asked readers to, what the hay, pen a tribute song to a law firm. The contest, according to Hallman, wasn’t close — only one person applied. But the winner, Kray, is certainly deserving. The result: a Kray original “Skadden, You Gladden My Heart.” (Click here to listen to the MP3; click here for Kray’s Web site.)

The lyrics:

SKADDEN, YOU GLADDEN MY HEART

Skadden, you gladden my heart.
You stand out, an army apart.
Supporting your fellows,
Turning foes yellow.
Skadden, you gladden my heart.

Skadden, the fads you have spawned
With mavericks the likes of Joe Flom.
Impostors aplenty,
But you’re still holding steady.
Skadden, you gladden my heart.

And our IP lawyers, now the stars of lore!
My dismissal rests on you.
Was it wrong to use this old song form?
Did I steal the blues?
Skadden, don’t be angry with my song.
I penned it with time off the clock.

And I mean it when I say
I hope you’ll let me stay.
Skadden, you gladden . . . my heart.

While you’re at it, LBers, click through and read the nice little Q&A Hallman has with Kray. Feel free to leave a snarky comment below if you have to, but before you do, look inside your soul LBers, and ask yourselves if Ms. Kray truly deserves it. After all, she wrote a halfway-decent song about Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP!

That said, if you gotta go with the snark, we ain’t gonna stop you.

Update: A reader called “Anon” has indicated that he or she might have something like a “Kirkland & Ellis” songbook. Suffice it to say, we’re curious. “Anon,” in case you’re wondering how to get in touch, let’s remind you: lawblog@wsj.com.
