How Safe are your kids at School?

By Oguz Ozdemir

ADVERTISEMENTS

When most of us were growing up and attending school, our worries were more social and educational rather than that of survival. You wondered if that person that you were interested in liked you and you only seemed to find out through your friends and school gossip. And as for your actual classes, actually doing your homework was only half as important as bringing it to class. Big tests meant big worries and report cards were always a stressful time.

And as for your actual classes, actually doing your homework was only half as important as bringing it to class. Big tests meant big worries and report cards were always a stressful time.

But times have certainly changed. These days kids have to first make it to school without being abducted or attacked by strangers. Once at school they have to deal with bullies, drug use and the increased chance that another student may have decided to deal with his or her demons by bringing a gun to school and going on a killing spree.

Add in the usual cliques that are still around that put pressure on kids to be popular, the increased stress of actually getting the education that they are supposed to leave with and any situations that the child brings with him from his or her home life and you have a far cry from the good old days.

But there are things that you can instill in your children to prepare them in advance in case unexpected circumstances do occur. Knowledge is power and the more you can prepare your child in advance the better his or her chances are of making it through safely.

Young children should be escorted to school or the bus stop by you the parent. They should know their key contact information – address and phone number. If they are too young to remember this information use a permanent marker and include it on a label in their clothing or inside their lunch box.

Older children should never walk to the bus stop or stand there alone. It is an invitation for potential danger. Make sure that they walk with friends and go over what they should do if they are ever approached by a stranger. Older children should always have a cell phone with them in case of an emergency.

You should make it a point to speak with your child every day about the events that occurred during their school day – even if nothing happened. It is better that you know in advance if your child is dealing with a bully or if there is a kid at school that is acting a little weird.

Going over what to do during and emergency or lock down situation is important for you and your child. Let them know what to do and what not to do so that they are armed with the information they need to make the right decisions and keep them safe.

Anything you can do to prepare your child in advance will give you peace of mind and help them survive the school day.
