How safe are your kids at School? Part Two

By Oguz Ozdemir

ADVERTISEMENTS

It used to be traumatic for parents sending their kids to school every fall. The child was either just starting school and leaving the nest or they were moving up a grade as they got older each year. Not only did you not worry about how or if they got to school you really didn't have to worry about whether they would return at the end of the day.

Incidents that have occurred in recent years have made parents across the country concerned about their child's safety in getting to and from school as well as the time spent during classes on school grounds. How safe are your kids at school?

Well, most of the time, things are under control, but it is when circumstances occur that we realize how vulnerable our children are while attending school. Situations that were thought to be serious in the past – poor grades, truancy and cliques – have given way to drug use, alcoholism in younger and younger children, and the possibility of someone bringing a weapon to school.

Even though we hate to admit it these dangerous situations being aware of them is important and can help prepare your child to be as safe as he or she can be. A child should feel comfortable at school and should not have to worry about having to deal with things like this when they should be focused on their education.

But the few things that you and your child can do in advance will better prepare your child when and if they need it. Make sure that your young children know their key contact information – full name, address and phone number. If they can't retain any of this information make a label and tape it into their lunch box or inside the back of their shirt.

Make sure that your older children, especially high school age, let you know about any suspicious behavior at school. Get in contact with school administrators and provide your child with the name of a trusted advisor that they can confide in anonymously if they did witness any potentially dangerous behavior.

All it takes is one person who is not afraid to make their observations known to possibly divert a dangerous situation. Besides saving the lives of students and administrators, the person in question should be entitled to get the help that they need to address their condition.

Listen to your children, young and older, and pay attention to the atmosphere at their schools. Don't wait until something happens because you have been too busy. Being alert to the situations at hand on a regular basis will alert you to any potential danger in the future. Knowing what to do ahead of time will help you and your child in the event of a crisis.

Our professional team of lawyers at Napoli Bern Ripka is here to assist you if your child ever becomes the victim of dangerous or inappropriate behavior at school. Rest assured that your peace of mind is just a phone call away. Feel free to call 1-888-LAW-IN-NY for a free consultation any time.
