Today marks the eighth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11 and while there are still moments of silence, prayer and somberness to commemorate the tragedy, the event serves as a history lesson for those too young to remember it and an indelible marker for those youth now growing into adulthood.
Today was also the first day in over a week that education news coverage was not dominated by the president?s address to school children, which for all the furor preceding it, ended up being nothing more than the Obama administration intended: a call to students to take their studies and future seriously.
In other news from School Board News Today daily compilation of headlines:
Negotiations between a suburban Seattle school district and its teacher union broke down Thursday, failing to end a 15-day teacher strike and eliciting a Superior Court judge to fine teachers and the union for every day they stay out of the classroom.
Virginia health officials are asking districts to report absent students to them as part of an effort to track and stay ahead of swine flu.
And finally, the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation launched a new initiative this week to combat the nation?s high drop out rates, partnering with Viacom Inc.?s television networks to broadcast messages to kids to stay in school.
