: New York City Personal Injury LawyerTractor Trailer Driver Trapped in Dangling Cab for Two Hours on New Jersey Turnpike
By Paul Napoli
December 23, 2009
An accident near Exit 5 of Mount Laurel left a tractor-trailer hanging off an overpass and traffic backed up for miles on the New Jersey Turnpike Wednesday morning.
According to State Police, John Monroe Jr., 67, of Mount Laurel, exited the James Cooper Service Area in his Chevy van onto the northbound lanes of the Turnpike around 5:45 a.m., cutting in front of a tractor-trailer. The two vehicles collided and the driver of the tractor-trailer, Ramond Joaneme, 41, of West Babylon, NY, lost control of the rig.
The collision caused Joaneme's tractor-trailer to crash through an overpass guardrail and plunge toward Parkers Creek. The cab was mangled, the trailer shredded and the cargo of hair products scattered as the cab dangled from the overpass and Joaneme awaited rescue with his leg pinned.
Rescue crews from the Mount Laurel Fire Department worked in the creek below and repelled from the bridge in their efforts to free the trapped driver. At 8 a.m., after two hours, they finally freed Joaneme and a rescue helicopter airlifted him to Cooper University Hospital in Camden for treatment of a broken leg and shoulder and facial injuries
Monroe was transported to Virtua Memorial hospital in Mount Holly with minor injuries.
The accident scene closed the two right northbound lanes and left traffic backed up for miles as motorists were forced to use only the left lane while rescue crews operated and the accident was cleared.
