The Times a-Changing: Nev. Brothel Gets OK To Offer Men to Clients

By Ashby Jones

ADVERTISEMENTS

brothelThe same-sex marriage debate has been roiling our country for several years now. But here’s a wrinkle: what about same-sex prostitution?

The issue recently came up out in Nye County, Nevada, where it’s legal for men to pay for sex with women. A county board’s vote Tuesday approved the request of Bobbi Davis, a brothel-owner, to offer men to her clientele. The vote followed months of heated debate among the state’s legal brothel community. Click here for the story, from the LA Times.

According to the story, the industry, “in its own peculiar way, is somewhat conservative,” and often “balks at change.”

The move has its opponents. Like George Flint, the longtime lobbyist for the Nevada Brothel Assn. According to the LAT, Flint hinted that brothels possibly offering gay sex — a choice each prostitute, as an independent contractor, would be free to make — might spell doom for the entire brothel system.

But Davis and her husband merely hope to boost business. Their small outpost near Death Valley offers as many as five women and has gotten some requests for gigolos.

Davis figures that, even if it’s a flop, adding men to her roster is worth trying. So far, she said has been inundated with more than 100 applications.
