Winter driving ? Do you know the Two-Second Rule?

By Steve Lombardi

ADVERTISEMENTS

You can do everything right, but…

Driving carefully may not be enough to save your life. After all you just might be a passenger and not responsible for driving any vehicle. On the other hand I like to remind my children that sometimes it's not what you do or don't do, but the other drivers who are the one's who are driving distracted. And they can be the ones who ultimate cause the collision and wreck your life. I guess being a personal injury attorney let's you see many types of collisions out there and there isn't a crash scenario that you can't conjure up in your mind at any point on the highways. I don't know maybe I've been doing this too long?

It isn't so much what you do as much as what the other guy may or may not do. Here is one such example. First I have to admit to the news report being confusing. The title refers to I-80 but the story to I-29. Perhaps they are one in the same in South Dakota; I don't know and wasn't able to find out before posting this article. But I suspect not since the odd numbers refer to north-south interstates and the even numbers to east-west and since she was heading north I'd say it's probably I-29. Just take a look at the Google map. But then again the two interstate highways may join to wrap around a major city such as I-80 and I-35 do around the north and western edge of Des Moines, West Des Moines, Urbandale and Clive here in Iowa. No matter the important point is you have to stay awake and aware of not just what you're doing but what the other cars seem to be going to do.

In this collision we have a 48-year-old woman in a collision at around 3:30 a.m. just north of the Worthing exit. A Jaguar is rear-ended by a Cadillac that is then run into by a Subaru. Don't you wonder how cars are rear-ending each other on the Interstate? I do. Are they following too close? Are they distracted with cell phones? Are the drivers not paying attention to the road conditions, seeing ice and not slowing down for the road surface conditions? Are people cutting in between two cars reducing the distance for safe following? What the heck is going on out there? Doesn't anyone driver courteously anymore?

Do you know the Two-Second Rule? In winter make it 3 or 4 seconds.

Our thoughts go out to the family of the woman that died.
