On April 23, 1983 Joe Mello Unplugged from the Electrical Grid - How?

By Steve Lombardi

We drive millions of cars consuming fuel as we go. Some say there are 125 million cars on the American roads while others figure the number closer to 254 million vehicles being registered in the United States. No matter the actual number it's enormous. The fuel is probably more important; how much do we use? Would you believe roughly 21 million barrels a day? One answer is closer to 9 million gallons each day or 143 billion gallons/year. The U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates consumption at 137.8 billion or 3.28 billion barrels of gasoline in 2008.

Some people are running their cars and trucks on vegetable oil.

Home heating is another use where consumption is enormous. About 8.1 million households use heating oil to warm the hearth. Many people are looking for ways to save money and need to think long term. Here is one example from Bristol, Rhode Island. A guy with a fourth-grade education, the will to be self sufficient eliminated his home energy bill in April 1983. And they tell us it can't be done. His name is Joe Mello and he built his own wind turbine. He carved the blades and generated enough power to serve his home and shop. Here is another story of personal ingenuity and creativity from a sea side town.

What would happen if your town passes a resolution making it possible for many to erect one windmill for their own use? How many of us could unplug from the grid and help solve the energy crisis that is coming.

Who says we can't build and manufacture things in America? Just keep the politicians out of the way and we can solve our own problems. Think about what this says about how powerful the energy industry is and how they are making it difficult for us to become energy self sufficient and independent from Middle Eastern oil. Consider why the political process works against not for the working person who toils just to pay the bills.
