Teen Worker Falls into Sewage Pit at Long Island Dunkin Donuts and Dies

A 17-year-old employee taking out the garbage at a Dunkin Donuts on Sunday evening fell into a sewage pit and died, the Associated Press reported this morning.

When Amiri Zeqiri, 17, of Central Islip, did not return after taking out the trash at the Dunkin Donuts in Smithtown on Long Island's North Shore, his 14-year-old cousin became concerned and looked for him. He found Zeqiri in a sewage pit behind the donut shop that collects waste from toilets and sinks. He ran for help at a nearby business, but Zeqiri sank below the surface before help returned.

The Suffolk County Police Department's Emergency Services Section responded to the scene, pulling Zeqiri from the sewage pit and transporting him to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center, where medical personnel pronounced him dead at 10:10 pm, www.northshoreoflongisland.com reported.

Sewage pits are either a waste holding tank that must be pumped out frequently, or a gravel-bottomed pit that filters waste by trapping solids and allowing liquids to pass into the ground.

Police told the Associated Press that the sewage pit that Zeqiri fell into usually had a manhole cover. They are investigating what happened to that manhole cover and why the sewage pit was left an open hazard.

Many factors must be taken into consideration when determining if a worker's injury or death was the result of negligence, equipment failure or dangerous working conditions. If you have been injured while on the job, you may be entitled to compensation such as medical expenses and lost wages. If your loved one has been injured or killed on the job, you may be entitled to compensation for funeral expenses, lost prospect of receiving an inheritance and the loss of financial support for the loved one's personal injury or wrongful death.
