: Legal Pad | LAOC settles inmate Taser suit
By Richard Binder
Matthew Fleuret, a former jail inmate who alleged he was Tasered while handcuffed and slammed to the floor by sheriff's deputies, has been paid $750,000 by Orange County.
The lawsuit stemmed from Fleuret's March 2006 arrest, for which he was never prosecuted. Fleuret was suspected of obstructing a deputy after getting into a bar fight on St. Patrick's Day. Video footage showed Fleuret being placed in a holding cell at Orange County Jail and held on the floor by at least five deputies, one of whom pulls Fleuret's arms back while others repeatedly shock him with the Taser over a period of about 13 minutes.
Fleuret originally sued for $47.5 million. The settlement was paid out in early March.
Assistant Sheriff Tim Board said that much has changed inside the department regarding the use of force since that incident. Read the full story here.
