: The GavelNew Report: 1 in 5 Non-Elderly Americans Has A Pre-Existing Condition
By Karina
Families USA released a new report today showing that more than 57 million Americans under the age of 65 have been diagnosed with a pre-existing condition?or more than one in five non-elderly Americans. That?s one in five who would be hurt by Congressional Republicans? efforts to repeal health reform.
The report also found that nearly 5,000,000 children under the age of 18, have a pre-existing condition that could lead to a denial of coverage. Starting in September, under the Affordable Care Act, children with pre-existing conditions can no longer be discriminated against by insurance companies. In January 2014, when the Health Insurance Exchanges are up and running, adults will get this same protection. Already, under the Affordable Care Act, no one can be dropped from coverage because they get sick.
