AMPAS: Mundy, Mundy, how could you leave - and take the estate?

By Richard Binder

ADVERTISEMENTS

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has filed suit in Superior Court against Robert Mundy, the executor of the estate of director Gene Curtis Harrington.  The Academy claims that Mundy left the country with close to $600,000 from Harrington's estate, funds that were meant to be used to establish a yearly scholarship for film students.

The suit says Mundy delayed putting Harrington's affairs in order for three years, due to "illness," Mundy allegedly said.  The complaint says the executor first claimed to have cancer, then a "series of small strokes," and finally arthritis in his hands that kept him from adding up the estate's accounts.

Last August, Mundy's attorney told a probate court that his client had left the country, and had been using the estate's assets for his own purposes.

The Academy demands $750,000, and punitive damages. It is represented by David Quinto with Quinn Emanuel Urquhart.
