Another One Bites the Dust; And Another. The Bankruptcy Blog Laments.

By Joseph McDaniel, Esq.

ADVERTISEMENTS
Restaurants are closing and filing bankruptcy cases in Arizona at an increasing pace.

I have written about this previously, and now point out that my worst fears of restaurant closings have been realized.

The Lazy Lou's on Bethany Home Road is closed.

For a period equal to my years on earth, Lazy Lou's Fish and Chips was Nirvana for fish eaters in the Mohave Desert. Where we don't grow, you know, a lotta fish.

It will be missed. By me. A lot.

And almost as bad, my Guilty Pleasure Dairy Queen on 16th Street is now no more.

Make it stop! Eat more! This can't go on!

The reason this is happening, of course, is that the United States in in a depression. Real unemployment continues to increase, and all those small businesses that were the backbone of our country, and the engine of employment for U.S. Citizens, are closing.

Because when a two paycheck family becomes a one paycheck family, bankruptcy cases happen. And just as importantly, the new one-paycheck family spends less on items that are discretionary.

Like Dairy Queen. Lazy Lou's. The Black Angus on Camelback Road. The Fuddruckers near the Black Angus.

And dentists, car repairs, car exteriors (car washes are closing, too), haircuts, and chiropractors, restaurants, dog groomers, yard maintenance, and everything else that can be stretched out from once a week to once a month, or once a month to once every two months.

I hope that this depression will be over very, very soon.

But I don't think so. Because I saw the price on the gas pump.

Now, this is a kinda crazy, radical, far out thought.

Do you think we could reduce unemployment and inflation if we put guys to work mining for coal, drilling for oil, and building power plants like the ones in Japan? And building windmills and nuclear and using our ability to farm like crazy to make alcohol (which burns clean) to run our cars with no pollution to fill the gap short term?

Note that Ford makes cars that will run on any mix at all of alcohol and gasoline, from all alcohol to all gasoline to half and half. They just don't sell 'em in the United States.

And do you think gas would be cheaper if we drilled our own, instead of letting every other nation on earth drill off our coasts, and then buying our offshore oil back from them?

And if the cost of oil and gas and electricity were a tenth what it is now, would that be good? Do you think that would reduce the prices of food and every other item that gets shipped in a truck? On or rails?

Just a thought. I'm probably wrong, of course.

Because I'm just an Arizona bankruptcy attorney.
