: Legal Pad | LAAppeals court approves Schwarzenegger's minimum wage order for state workers
By Richard Binder
The 3rd District Court of Appeal in Sacramento ruled on Friday in favor of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger reducing state workers' pay to the federal minimum wage because the state budget is late. This would amount, for most employees, to $7.25 an hour.
The ruling comes from a 2008 case during a similar budget impasse. When Schwarzenegger initially gave the reduction order, State Controller John Chiang refused to comply.
According to The Sacramento Bee, some state employees would now receive no pay because federal exempts them from any minimum wage requirement. Managers supervisors and others who don't get paid for working more than 40 hours per week would receive $455 a week until a budget is approved.
Chiang says the old computerized payroll system cannot be easily reprogrammed to make large-scale salary adjustments so quickly.
