July 14, 2010 Letter to the Boston Globe ACCORDING TO the Globe?s reporting of Alex DoSouto?s turnaround from a life of crime, most likely he will stay the course to his college dreams despite his sentence of two to three years in prison (?DoSouto given prison sentence,?? Sports, July 10). While doing time, DoSouto, a recent graduate of Boston English High School and basketball standout, may even serve as a positive role model to other prisoners. Yet incarceration of an already transformed man raises the bigger question of what purpose prison serves in cases like this. Surely it is not public safety, rehabilitation, or correction.
