: Legal Pad | LATitans' suit accuses Kiffin, USC of improper hiring protocol
By Richard Binder
The Tennessee Titans have filed suit against USC and coach Lane Kiffin over the hiring of Titans assistant Kennedy Pola as offensive coordinator. The Titans accuse both Kiffin and the university of "maliciously" intending to have Pola breach his contract with the Tennessee team.
Pola's contract required him to have written consent before "solicit[ing] discussions or entertain[ing] employment" with any team other than the Titans. The lawsuit goes on to characterize "a course and pattern of conduct fostered by Kiffin and USC to use improper methods and means to the direct harm and damage of parties to contracts ...."
The suit also makes mention of incidents regarding Kiffin's stormy history with coaching in Tennessee, where the suit was filed in Davidson County Chancery court. The Titans are seeking compensatory, treble and punitive damages under Tennessee law.
