WI Disclosure Rule is Enjoined

By Peter Hardin

ADVERTISEMENTS

The Wisconsin Supreme Court has voted 4-3 to freeze a state rule requiring new disclosure for groups airing certain political ads and messages shortly before an election.

A number of groups have sued to challenge the new disclosure rules, in different courts. The state Supreme Court issued an injunction in the case that went beyond an agreement reached earlier by state officials to hold off enforcement of a portion of the rules, according to a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article.

“Petitioners have met their burden to show a likelihood of irreparable injury if a temporary injunction is not issued,” the state Supreme Court ordered Friday.

The Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, a partner of Justice at Stake, said in a statement that if the injunction holds, “[T]he losers in any case will be state voters who will be left to guess who’s really behind many of this fall’s attack ads that soon will inundate the airwaves.”
