Oxnard teen shooting trial stays in Ventura County, but jurors will be drawn from elsewhere

By Richard Binder

Superior Court Judge Charles Campbell has ordered that jurors in the Brandon McInerney trial be drawn from Santa Barbara County rather than Ventura County, agreeing with the defense's contention that intense press coverage threatened the 16-year-old's right to a fair trial.

The Ventura County Star, in particular, has covered the shooting of gay teenager Lawrence "Larry" King in detail, from profiles of victim and accused murderer to, according to the LA Times, "[e]very twist and turn in the case."

The trial will stay in Ventura County, says the judge, who will give more details about jury selection at a Thursday briefing.

McInerney was 14 when he allegedly shot King execution-style in a junior high school classroom in Oxnard. Witnesses say King had expressed a romantic interest in McInerney, which led to the shooting. McInerney is being tried as an adult and faces 53 years to life in prison if convicted.
