A Reno, Nevada man was sentenced to 20 years in prison by a Washoe County District judge for violently shaking his 11-weeks old infant daughter. Gerardo Espinosa, a 19-year-old illegal immigrant from Mexico, was found guilty last month after 20 minutes of deliberation by a jury for inuring his daughter because "she interrupted him while he was playing a video game."
Espinosa told investigators the baby's injuries occurred from an accidental fall on Oct. 29, 2009 when he was baby-sitting. He did not testify at his trial.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Dan Greco said prior to Espinosa's sentencing that 30 seconds of violent shaking "condemned his infant girl to a life of misery."
"During 30 seconds of violent shaking, Gerardo Espinosa condemned his infant girl to a life of misery," said Chief Deputy District Attorney Dan Greco in describing her permanent brain injuries and loss of vision and hearing. Read More
