Southern District of California U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy was formally sworn in Thursday in a ceremony at the U.S. Coast Guard base in San Diego.
Duffy, who was nominated by President Barack Obama in February and confirmed by the Senate in May, has served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District since 1997. She replaced interim U.S. Attorney Karen P. Hewitt, who has led the San Diego-based office since Carol Lam was forced out during the 2006 U.S. Attorney firings.
In June, Duffy was sworn in as U.S. Attorney. But U.S. Attorneys often have ceremonial investitures later on, with local, state and federal leaders in attendance. Attorney General Eric Holder attended the investiture ceremony Thursday. According to the San Diego Union Tribune, Duffy said her office plans to focus on national security, narcotics and border security, financial fraud and white collar crime cases.
