: Truth on the MarketSeen in the HP, a continuing series
Picking up a pizza last night at the local Giordano’s last night, I was surprised to see this sign. (Those are my legs at the bottom of the picture, which was taken with my phone.) Unemployment in Illinois is nearly 11%, and here on the Southside of Chicago, it must be significantly higher than that. A guess for the five-mile radius around my house is about 20-25%. And yet:
I asked the manager inside why they have any trouble filling these positions: “I keep scratching my head,” he said. Me too. I understand being a “phone person” at a pizza shop isn’t the greatest gig in the world, but it sure beats staying at home. Or does it? Have we made life out of work significantly comfortable for the people who are qualified to be phone persons that there is no reason for them to take these jobs?
