Today's Quote: Typewriters Aren't Dead Yet

By Lynne DeVenny

ADVERTISEMENTS
"You've got people, you just couldn't pull them away from their typewriter. They're going to use it till the day they pass, because it's just friendly, and they feel comfortable. It feels like an old friend." ~ Bob Will (Buffalo News)

I grew up with - and even took to college - my mother's old electric typewriter, which looked a lot like the big, scary one in the picture. Only hers included a poltergeist that typed whatever it wanted if you even waved your hands in the general vicinity of the keyboard. That typewriter was my arch enemy until the day I gratefully abandoned it at the closest GoodWill store.

I guess I just assumed that everyone was as eager to bury their possessed typewriters six feet under as I was after I got my first home computer, but that's not the case. I stumbled across an interesting article, "Still busy fixing relics of the past," about a very much in-demand typewriter repair service, Will Repair Service in Dunkirk, New York.

The reasons listed in the article for choosing a typewriter over a computer range from comfort and security and the sound of the keys striking the paper, to "I have more control over my typewriter." (Maybe the person who said this had hers exorcised.)

If you're feeling a little nostalgic for your old typewriter, check out Will Repair Service's site. For me, the pictures and background sounds just brought back traumatic memories of keys eerily rattling away, with no human hands within a foot of them...
