Larry Ribstein: "The Disgrace of the Legal Services Market"

ADVERTISEMENTS

At his Truth on the Market blog, Larry Ribstein severely criticizes the US legal profession for economic protectionism that prevents ordinary citizens from obtaining legal services.  I largely agree.  But I don't sense any consumer revolt brewing in the US, as apparently happened in the UK.  (I could be dead wrong about that.)  And when we speak of economic protectionism in the legal profession, we have to include a discussion of the exclusionary process played by law schools.  The ABA accreditation process, coupled with laws requiring lawyers to graduate from ABA accredited schools, is one of the principal bulwarks (if not the biggest) against increased competition.
