Holder Disputes Claim DOJ Isn?t Race Neutral

By Andrew Ramonas

ADVERTISEMENTS

Attorney General Eric Holder on Monday dismissed allegations that the Justice Department doesn’t enforce voting rights laws in a race-neutral manner, Fox News reported.

“The notion that we are enforcing any civil rights laws — voting or others — on the basis of race, ethnicity or gender is simply false,” Holder said at a news conference on an unrelated subject.

Holder said he has “no idea” why Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Coates would allege that DOJ officials were opposed to the enforcement of the Voting Rights Act when there was suspected discrimination against whites. Coates, the former chief of the Civil Rights Division Voting Section, blasted the DOJ last month for dismissing most of the charges in a controversial voter intimidation case against members of the New Black Panther Party.

“People have to understand the way in which … the Civil Rights Division was run, and how it was politicized, and how hiring was done, and the way in which enforcement occurred,” he said. “Some people want to go back to those old days and want to have a Civil Rights Division that is not nearly as effective as it is now or as it has traditionally been. I am not going to allow that to happen.”
