'Pardon Me, Officer, but Could You Just Run My Name Through Your Computer?'

By Eric Lipman

ADVERTISEMENTS
I thought about awarding Selma Elmore the official Legal Blog Watch Dumb Criminal of the Day honors, but thought that was being too kind. Per Lowering the Bar, Elmore, of Lockland, Ohio, flagged down a police officer on the street at about 2:30 a.m. last Friday. Had she been the victim of a crime? No. Was she lost and in need of directions? Certainly not. Why did she beckon to Officer Dan Lyons? To ask him the following questions, as reported by the Cincinnati Enquirer: First question: Is there a curfew for adults in Lockland? No curfew, Lyons responded. Second question: Is there a warrant for my arrest? Yes, in fact there is a warrant, the officer told her after a quick check. At which point, predictably, Elmore took off running, the cop gave chase, Elmore shoved him into a building, and was subsequently arrested on her open warrant (for failure to pay a fine after a drug conviction) and also charged with resisting arrest. Thanks for playing, Selma.
