New and ugly political attack ads were launched in battleground states including Michigan, Alabama and Alaska as state judicial campaigns approached the finish line.

In Michigan, state Democrats used recent disclosures by former Justice Elizabeth Weaver, a Republican, to state that Justice Robert Young had used the N-word and the word “slut” in private deliberations with other justices (see Gavel Grab). She has acknowledged recording her colleagues.

“We don’t need a racist or a sexist on the Michigan Supreme Court,” the ad states. Justice Young is African American and Republican, and he has stoutly protested the ads that discuss race.

“It’s really quite disgusting,” Justice Young said, according to a Detroit News article. “If people can accept or reject my judicial philosophy, I think that’s entirely legitimate. But my race?I don’t know why black folks have to be pilloried like this.”

Another Democratic ad asserts, “Bob Young says, ‘My job isn’t to be fair.’ Yes it is.”

In Alabama, a new ad by state Supreme Court candidate Mac Parsons contends Justice Tom Parker supports eliminating a woman’s right to vote. The ad by Democratic Judge Parsons says it is based on an award taht Justice Parker, a Republican, received from a group that has that view.

A campaign spokesman for Justice Parker dismissed the claim and said, according to a Mobile Press-Register article, ?Parsons is insulting the intelligence of voters and making himself look like a nut in the process. Send in the clowns!?

In Alaska, a group called Alaskans for Judicial Reform targets Justice Dana Fabe in a TV ad showing a black-robed figure feeding papers, including an apparent ballot, into a paper shredder. “Don’t allow bad judges to shred the will of the people,” an announcer says, adding that Justice Fabe “has opposed parents’ rights” and “forced taxpayers to pay for abortions.”

In her retention election, Justice Fabe is under attack from some abortion foes (see Gavel Grab). A recent Alaska Daily News article recaps the contest under the headline, “Allies defend Fabe as justice fights campaign to oust her.”
