First Transgender Trial Judge Elected in CA

Victoria  Kolakowski became the first transgender trial judge in the nation when she won election last week in Alameda County, California, according to an Oakland Tribune article.

Kolakowski sought in her campaign to “bring diversity to the bench through her experience being transgender and her background as an attorney focusing on civil matters through her job as an administrative law judge at the California Public Utilities Commission,” the newspaper reported. She defeated Deputy District Attorney John Creighton.

A short New York Times article about her election said Kolakowski underwent  gender reassignment surgery more than 20 years ago.
