: The GavelD.C. Gay Marriage Law Survives Challenge
By Peter Hardin
The Supreme Court turned aside Tuesday an appeal request by foes of the District of Columbia’s gay marriage law, who had fought to get a ballot question inviting voters to reverse the statute.
In July, the District of Columbia Court of Appeals ruled that D.C. officials had the authority to keep the issue off the ballot in a referendum (see Gavel Grab post). A Maryland pastor and others, in turn, took their challenge to the nation’s highest court, leading to today’s ruling.
The District of Columbia started giving marriage licenses for same-sex couples in 2010, according to an Associated Press article.
