You Don't Have to Convince Me that You're Honorable: I'm a BANKRUPTCY LAWYER!

By Joseph McDaniel, Esq.

ADVERTISEMENTS
I can tell when people haven't done their bankruptcy homework, or haven't read much of my blog.

In particular, I am always a little entertained when folks need to explain to me that they are really honorable people, even though they are coming to me about a bankruptcy.

It's as though they're coming into a pornography emporium, and they're whispering that even though they want to rent some movie about Debbie and Texas, they're still nice folks.

I patiently explain to them that I'm a bankruptcy lawyer, and that I want to help people get out from under their overwhelming debt. And it's O-K! And the Founders of our Country built bankruptcy into the Constitution. So how bad and dishonorable can it be?

And I've written about that, frequently and recently.

Now, if you need to explain to me that you need to file a bankruptcy, but you're really an honorable person otherwise, I'll listen to you, with love and patience, for as long as I can stand it.

But at some point I'm going to have to explain that I like people, and I get it: sometimes you're the windshield, and sometimes you're the bug.

p.s. It's not quite as bad as it was when I started practice as a bankruptcy attorney thirty years ago; I had developed a little local celebrity, because I'd clerked for two U.S. Bankruptcy Judges after law school, and was on the Committee that drafted the Local Rules for the District of Arizona Bankruptcy Court, so everybody understood that I did just one thing: Bankruptcy in Arizona!

And one client who had a businesses wanted me to meet him in a hotel restaurant, wearing a hat and trenchcoat (so I wouldn't be recognized), because he didn't want his creditors to get a head start on his plan to file a bankruptcy!

I'm still laughing about that one.
