Swiper

By Anne Skove, Esq.

ADVERTISEMENTS

Those of you with Dora-sized fans at home know about Swiper. He's a fox who sneaks through the scene every so often. We guarantee he is up to no good. When they see him, kids are supposed to yell "Swiper! No swiping!" to alert our didactic-yet-upbeat little amiga.

Those of you without such goings-on in your home will just have to close your eyes and imagine it.

Court customers in New Hampshire are yelling "swiper!" too. Some such people who paid fines or fees by swiping a plastic card were not charged user fees mandated by state law.

Others were charged the fee, but credit card companies prohibit such fees. (You read that correctly! Credit card companies have found one fee they dislike.)

Legislation that would reverse the current law is pending. Meanwhile, the court, after consulting with the state attorney general, is charging the fee. The attorney general supports the change in law, but has recommended that the court comply with the state law as it now exists.

Who's the real Swiper?

See Law Mandates Surcharge but Violates Credit Card Policy, Elizabeth Dinan, Seacostonline (March 27, 2008).

Now, everybody -- sing the We Did It song! ¡Lo hicimos!
